Hi All,

Just returned from a trip to Brisbane and picked up 6 Alpacas and one smoochy Angora Goat.

Before we left on Thursday and egg in the bator was pipping, when we returned home tonight my other half went to check how the bator was (because I didn't want to face a tragedy), and there were 6 lively little chicks in there. 2 little silkies, a white and a black and 4 from our laying hens.

The tragedy is that I thought the other eggs were no good, the other half took them out the back to see, and all the eggs had chicks and they were still warm etc, so if I left it another day they would have been alright.

The moral of the story is don't add eggs a few days later

However whatever I did worked and now my daughter is the mother of 6 chicks as I promised any from the first hatch to her

Oh and my new Goat is sooooooooooo cute, he is a wether and has grown up with alpacas so all is good at the dysfunctional farm :-D

Thanks Peter, It was a bit of both, I just hope I don't get to attatched to the chicks before my daughter gets them :-?

Darn! I really feel for you.

In preparation for taking the incubator and eggs out to Chad and Lori's I candled last night. I put aside a couple that were quite dark inside along with a few others that didn't seem to have developed. I was worried the dark ones may have been rotten or something.

I opened each after I got up this morning. The two dark ones had chicks in them that would have hatched next weekend if I'd left them in. :cry:

Each of the others except two had a developing embryo.

we only got 1 in our first attempt

It is the most exciting part of having chickens I reckon is the hatching of new chicks. The second is what colours the will end up. Congratulations on your first hatch.

It was a nice surprise to come home too. The best part was I hardly done a thing except keep the temp as close to ideal as possible and only add water when the humidity went down way to low but before it got to 25%. I think in the whole 21 days I only added water twice, the second time being on the 18th day to bring the humidity up. I put a damp spong in also, when we left on the 3rd day for brisbane the humidity was down to 60% so thought the hatch was gone.
