Which dog wormer?

Which dog wormer treats both worms and lice? I would like something that is quick and easy with no fuss

Worms and lice in chickens? Or are you asking abut a dog?

The "wormers" you are referring to are probably ivermectin, moxidectin and selamectin.

Ivermectin is found in heartgard chewables, moxidectin in ProHeart tablets and selamectin is in Revolution topical.

I don't know that anyone has shown that Revolution spot on actually works in poultry ( it may, but no one has proven it).

And personally I don't think ivermectin or moxidectin are particularly good for bird lice. They do work well for mites, however. Moxidectin is superior to ivermectin as a general bird wormer in my opinion.

I have always preferred to worm birds with a good bird wormer, and treat for lice with a topical spray or powder. If some of the wormers help with the mites ( +/- lice), then so much the better.

Hi Raf,

I like Avian Insect Liquidator by Vetafarm because as well as directly killing the mites and lice it contains an insect growth regulator which helps stop reinfestation for up to 6 weeks. It can also be used in the pen and on equipment. And it is registered for all birds and is quite safe.

I have also used frontline spray ( used for fleas in dogs & cats) but this product is not registered for birds. It is commonly used in birds in the UK too. Do not use the frontline spot-on- it is nowhere near as effective.

I'm sure others have their own favourites.

You just need to use the stuff often enough to break their life-cycle, and ensure you don't leave areas where mites in particular can hide ie dark corners & cracks.
