I was reading on other site and apparently Sulpha-Quin is unavailable and you can only get the same sort of product from the vets......when you try and buy it now from on-line sites it does say unavailable...but when I went into my produce store he said he had'nt heard anything and I did buy what he had......what do we use now if we have a cocci outbreak in our birds......

As soon as a current stocks are exhausted in the fodder stores you will be forced to go to the vet to obtain it. So they is the $60 consult fee plus what ever they like to charge you for the drug. I enquired about a drug to treat blackhead in turkeys and the vet quoted me something like $670 and when I contacted the company direct they said it was something like $250 for the same amount but only available on a vets script 7_mad.gif

so what will happen is we will have lots of unnessary deaths because people including myself can't afford to run to the vet everytime a bird gets sick...well I have a stock pile and they tell me I can use it past the use by date as long as I keep it stored right....

I am lead to believe because it is a sulphur based drug that it will still be ok beyond its use by date, but dont quote me on that

I find it hard to believe that sulpha quin has or is being banned, for what reason? The sulpha base is used in so many products Inc triple sulpha for caged birds and in cattle ect....... it has been around since day dot and is by no means a strong drug. I will ask my mate tomorrow who is a leading vet if this is at all true and I would be very surprised if it is.

If true = my theory – it is money driven = to have more money go into the coffers of the companies
I have also heard it is going to be only via Vets  th_Noooo.gif

You can still get BayCox and Amprolium over the counter – both are used for Coccidiosis

No Not banned discontinued here's something that was on other poultry site below.

I can see a rush on the Sulpha drugs as we all stockpile them to get through this year's season which, of course, is going to be a horror because it's damp.

My local supplier - The Feed Shed in Bungendore - has confirmed this. He's just checked with the supplier. So I've just bought three of his last seven bottles on the shelf ... panic buying? No ... I've got chicks hatching next week and I have BAD cocci at my place. Fear? Absolutely ...

As Sulpha-quin is now actually discontinued, and won't be available even on prescription, I've amended the thread heading to reflect that.

I have never liked Sulpha Quin and found it didn't work well at all. BayCox is a better product anyway so my view is sulpha quin has had its day [in my case never had its day] and if it has gone so be it.....

The issue with Sulpha-Quin being discontinued is because of its registration being lifted from an S6 ("over-the-counter") drug to an S4 (prescription) drug. The cost of registering an S4 drug is very high, and there are already several S4 sulpha-based drugs on the market which are often combined with the drug trimethoprim which improves their overall antibacterial effectiveness. Therefore, it's not apparently worthwhile for Inca to continue making this product.

This has occurred because of the concern with drug residues and antibiotic resistance in the food chain. Sulpha-Quin is registered for use in poultry, so it is affected by these guidelines.

By contrast, Sulfa 3, which is also manufactured by Inca and contains 3 different sulpha-based drugs, is registered for cage birds so its registration level will not be affected (at this stage) and will continue to be manufactured by Inca.

If you read the fine print on Sulfa Quin it states "Do not use in birds producing eggs for human consumption". This direction is often ignored.

As others have written, baycox is a more effective anticoccidial drug and is the only drug that actually kills the coccidial organism, so is the drug of choice during an outbreak.

Sulpha drugs and amprolium are coccidiostatic- that is, they stop the coccidia from multiplying.

You can still buy amprolium-based products such as Amprolium 200 or Keystat solution which if used properly are effective ways of controlling infection, rather than treating bad outbreaks, and promote a degree of immunity to coccidiosis.

NONE of these products is registered for use in egg-laying birds used for human consumption- which can make things difficult!

Hope this information is of some help
