Worms

Hi all, just wondering if its always noticeable in the chooks dropping that they have worms?
My Wyandotte (10 months old) has lost so much weight, she no longer eats layer pellets, very rarely does she pick in the yard but when they get let out to free range at about 4pm she seems to eat lots. I have been feeding her separately where I can she has had cat food, atural yogurt, rolled oats. She is rather slow on her feet, other then being under weight she seems okay. She did have runny poop but now for the first time in months today she as done a solid poo (I was excited about this).
I worm them at the change of daylight savings, add the wormer to water.
I also know she hasn't laid an egg in ages as she was laying soft shell eggs, she'll grit is always available.

Sometimes parasites come resistant to the same wormer.

I am not sure why she maybe slow on her feet, someone with more eggsperienced may be able to help you.

If they get a big dose of worms it takes longer for them to recover and you will need to worm them all 2 weeks after the first time to make sure you get them all

So would I have seen worms in her poo though?

You are most likely to see worms in the 24-36 hrs after you have wormed them.
If you wormed them when daylight savings came in they could still be reinfected now. So yes, you can worm her again.
However, why do you think she has worms? It could be one of many things.
You said she hasn't laid for a while and before that the eggs were soft shelled. Is her belly swollen at all?

My thinking for worms was just a starting point I guess?
Her belly doesn't appear to be swollen, each night I go and check her before bed and make sure I have a feel...lol....her crop is all squishy, around her bum feels all nice and soft.
Today I gave her a can of cat food tuna and she scoffed it into her like no tomorrow. She seemed to do a lot of sleeping standing up today. I thought today she was a little weaker then yesterday

Excuse the pun, but does her breath smell foul? She may have an impacted crop if it is all squishy. Not 100% sure on how to treat an impacted crop, but reposting a You Tube link on it.

Try her on some probiotic yoghurt and if you can get some Poly Aid Plus it might help pick her up, also Apple Cider Vinegar in the chooks water twice a week aids with digestion.

Hi, snitz,

This sounds exactly like what happened to my little Rose. I'd be interested to see if it is worms or some other cause. I never worked it out and would like to be able to prevent future occurrences.

I hope she picks up and pulls through. It's quite upsetting to watch them get weaker and be unable to help.

My thoughts are with you!

Worms in birds can lead to other health problems because they become thin and weak from worms their immune system is also weak so they can get other diseases which could kill them. I think worming is your best place to start as you did snitz
