Hi

This morning when I went out to let my little ones out for the day I discovered a very bloody poo sitting on the roost/plank that is in the pen (See Pic 1 below).

It has sort of freaked me out, so I then got each chick into the laundry one at a time and waited until they poo'd on the floor so I could inspect the droppings a lot more closely.

It appears my little Commando may be the culpret of this awful looking poo as he had a bit of red stuff in his poo (see Pic 2 below), so I smashed it up (see Pic 3 below) and it sort of looks like dead worms but I don't really know if it is or not.

I have put Oxymav B into their water today to ward off any furhter infections, just in case it is an infection causing this, but I am not sure what "this" is.

Anyone have any idea what my baby has, and what I should do to help clear this problem up?

I have now finally been given the "search" function so I am searching for possible causes but really have no idea what to search for.

They have cocci and they all need cocci medication.Which you can get from the local feed store and some pet shops.

Thanks Macl27

I thought this might be the case but didn't want to presume and just go and buy the medicine without a second opinion.

Going now to buy the medication.

Should I dose all of my babies (and their mother), or should I just single the one little fella out?

Thanks
Chicka-Dee

Okay

Well all my babies got dosed this afternoon. I got a liquid medication that you give them directly into their mouth for 5-7 days, 3 times a day.

Boy! They hate me catching them now...Now I'm putting stuff in their mouths while holding them down.

Yep they're going to love me!

Hello, Mr. ww wave.gif ,

I know that I am not Chicka-Dee but you can get Amprolium for coccidiosis from www.littlevalleypoultry.com.

I got Something called Sulphadim? The girl at the produce place suggested this.

It says for "ornamental caged birds" but she said it was okay to use on chooks.

Have you heard of this WW? I hope I haven't been I'll advised.

If you know of something better, I would be open to your suggestions.

Sulphur based drugs help cocci, whether it be caged birds, ornamental or chooks. Sulphur based avian medication helps stressed birds of all breeds.

I will not comment further about the cause of cocci; here is the thread on Understanding Coccidiosis by someone much more wise and more knowledgeable than I///

Don't worry I've already read that thread and there was no need to look in the mirror!!!

My babies have gotten sick because we had 3 constant days of misty rain & down poors & they couldn't get out to free range so they were stuck in their cage where it was cold and a little damp in spots due to a leaky roof. Plus we had a couple of degrees in temperature drop as well, so they have not had a great run. I don't blame them for getting sick. I already blame me

It's only Commando who has the bloody poo, but I don't want the others to get it as well so all my babies are getting dosed.

The stuff you posted sounds good though. Especially the "No Withholding period". I might get some for my medicine cabinet. JIC. :)

Everyone was out today in their day cage because it was not raining and a lot more sunny most of the day.
Thanks PP

Best that you isolate Commando and treat him individually and preventative precautions on the others separately, Chicka-Dee, it can spread and kill his siblings, mother and the rest of your flock.
