Hi Chicka-Dee,

Sorry to hear that it's reforming. This suggests that either some of the infection was still left after the last surgery, or that there is still some underlying infection inside the bird.

Flushing the wound with lots of warm saline will help the former.

Treating the bird with antibiotics may help the internal infection; I would try a tetracycline, tylosin or linco-spectin if you can get access to these.

Cheers

Parvo

Hi Parvo

Yes I think you're right there must have been a small amount left from the last surgery even though my friend flushed it till there was nothing more coming out.

Would I get any of those antibiotics from an online mob or at the produce? All the vets around here are on an early retirement plan.

I didn't have time to go & check Clyde out yesterday but I will this morning & see how he's going, but I'm not expecting much improvement. :(

Will let you know what happens next....

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

The non-prescription antibiotics are limited but the one I would try is either Avicycline or Triple C- both contain tetracyclines and are made for cage birds but they would be worth trying. You should be able to find a supplier online.
The other drugs require veterinary prescription unfortunately.

As you have realised there can be localised pockets of infection that can be difficult to find and flush out or remove, but it may be worth trying again.

Good luck

Hi there, I'm new here & new to owning chickens. I have not read the whole thread, but this thread caught my attention as I was looking at You tube the other night & happened to see something like this on there. It was about worm eye. Would this be what your bird has?

So here is the link & let me know what you think of it?

Okay thanks again Parvo. I know I've seen that Triple C somewhere along the line so I will go hunting today. Will using this mean that I won't have to do another operation?

You know you wouldn't even think he had anything wrong with him if you look at him as I now have to lift his eyelid up to see the affected/infected area but I just want to get ontop of this before it gets bad again like last time.

Will let you know how how I go [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Oh hello Sallyb wave.gif I just said hello to you in the new member introductions.
Thanks for the post, but it is nothing as gross as that video, It's more of a hardish substance that is coming out.
I think I compared it to a whitehead, if you've ever squeezed one of those conf665

I think that's the best way I can describe it.
That poor chicken on that video th_Noooo.gif Worm eye, never heard of it before :(

There really is a lot to learn about chickens, so stick around and believe me, you'll learn heaps [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

it did sort of look like Clydes eye, you were right there but thank god nothing like that came out. Although they did get it out pretty quickly. Clyde's operations have been time consuming and a series of difficult procedures that have required needles, saline, a scalpel and a lot of wipes to clean up the blood as the last time he bled quite a lot as my friend had to slice through a little blood vessel :(

Poor baby really has had it rough over the last couple of weeks.

But yes, you're right D, that video is one of the grossest I've ever seen hide:

Who would have thought these poor chickens can get so many things wrong with them.

A friend had a hen with one eye once, the eye was badly pecked by the others and had to be removed. She didn't stray far from the coop after the surgery, and led a reasonable life for a couple of years.

Okay so this is Clydes eye as of this morning...................

You will see one photo it looks like nothing is wrong and then when you lift his eye lid then you can see the hard thing sitting in the hole, which my girlfriend dug a heap of out the other day.

Parvo, I have Oxymav B it seems to have some sort of tetracyline in it.......Will this do?

Im hoping it doesn't come down to him losing an eye HH. I would be devestated for my poor baby after all he has been through.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
