Yep spot on Snowball, they do stay calm and we all know that's important when your handling such a Big & Powerful bird. Your hood idea is an excellent one and I'm sure works a treat, sounds similar to what they use on Raptors. There might be a market there for your sister in law???

Thanks Brett and Sid. Guess what. Our other girl came home too. So we feel really lucky. Every one has split up now... they are in little cliques so it is all quite interesting. We found our little white Leghorn bantam we thought a fox had pinched. She is under some iron under the woolshed on about twenty eggs. We fixed up her possie so she can get out but a fox would have to dig a bit to get in, and we think we will leave her there rather than disturb her. Meanwhile is his "SPARE" minutes, Al is working on the aviary. It will be really wonderful when built. Just we are so busy as we both work a bit more than full time and have a massive chook/ vegie set-up , plus 20 acres. We planted 500 trees this year and 1000 last year.

Hi Pam, thats good news she came home to roost so to speak! sounds like your luck has changed for the better. We are all looking forward to seeing some Photos of your new Aviary when it's finished. We know how you feel, trying to get everything done & work at the same time it's a Juggling act!! especially when your on acreage. Is your Chook set-up Commercial (Poultry farm) What type of trees did you plant? one things for sure, you and Al have been very busy.

Not commercial. Just Linda Woodrow's set-up with the chook dome and the circles of the vegies so the chooks move around in a circle. We have two "mandalas" as she calls them, so twelve gardens all together. There is a fruit tree on the edge of each circle. Woodrow has written a book about it called The Home Permaculture Garden. We have to net them now because of the naughty peas who love all the silver beet, lettuce, turnips etc. Our friends are used to getting lacy produce!! It is really worth looking at the book. We also have another pen and we put newspaper under the night perches, then clean it out every three weeks.... roll up the poo impregnated paper and mulch the trees with that and grass clippings to hold the paper down. There is a tractor tyre pond in the middle of each mandala, to bring the frogs to eat the pests, but we still get heaps of course. Anything left after harvest and the weeds that have grown get demolished by the chooks next time they come around and of course refertilized. It is just beaut and looks really attractive as we have gravel paths. It looks a bit neglected at present after winter and we have had gale force winds so the tree net frames are awry but this is the weekend to fix it all. There are also heaps of dwarf apples from Bob Magnus in Tas and berries, an almond, peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines, etc. The trees planted on the property are all indigenous to here, redgums, wattles etc. We are on the banks of a river so we are revegetating and restoring the banks. I let Josephine out tonight and she joined the others and then a few of them returned to the pen so I fed them and locked them up. How much bigger thana hen's egg is a pea's??

Hi Pam, your place sounds great, great to read you live with your enviroment and work with it, unfortunately many don't. We too have many fruit trees and it's great to eat your way around parts of the Property, I'm sure you know what I mean. Peahen eggs are approx 2- 2.5 times the size of "normal" chook eggs, but they can vary in size and shape.
