Ivomectin Question

i think there are a few different brands you can buy, sounds like you have the right thing Henny Penny, depends on where you buy it on how much it costs, mine is the brown box Ivomec with a bulls head on it, i paid $49 at gatton QLD, greenaus was with me at the time.

As long as the active ingrediant is ivomectin i think its ok..

Somne one will correct me if its wrong..

Sounds right Kylie.

Though, I do recall someone saying there was a similar chemical in a similar product that had no with-holding period.

Since my chickens aren't laying, I'm not eating their eggs anyway. And, when they are laying, the various comments on here about it being hard to overdose your chooks leads me to the conclusion that I won't worry about any withholding period on eggs. I think I'd hold off on the meat though.

BUT, that's just me folks. Don't say I told you to eat eggs within the withholding period.

Ok, I've kind of checked. I did a Google search for Moxidectin to see if I spelt it right.

I had read here or some other forum about switching of chemicals to reduce the risk of parasites building up a resistance. The suggestion was to switch between Ivermectin and Moxidectin.

On an equine forum I just read that as these two are in the same chemical family switching them is NOT adequate (not for horses, at least, so probably not for chooks either).

Thats right Greenaus. They are all the same ivermectin family. Maybe you need to switch between ivermectin and maybe Big L or Nilverm both of which are Levamisole based. Just means one will have to dust as well with Pestene powder.

With the horses I alternate on a yearly basis and I will do the same with the chooks so the bugs don't become accustomed to one chemical.

Or dip in Maldison 50 (malowash)

So with Ivermectin (the topic) we don't need Pestene of Maldison, right? ;-)

No you don't really need pestene powder with ivermectin unless you have a broody hen. I would always powder her and the nest when she decided to go broody as lice just LOVE a broody hen.

I don't think I would drench the chook with Maldison but that is just a personal preference. I would still use this product when I cleaned the pens to spray all the perches and crevices.

I'm expecting to re-dose mine this week with Ivomec even though it's only been a few weeks.

Some must be getting close to laying again, so getting rid of any residual parasites or problems can only be a good thing, right?

I'm also going to respray the pens with Maldison 50.

After months of seeing NO lice or anything, two Saturdays ago we discovered one of the mother hens (and her chicks I guess) was infested with bird lice or some kind of mites. Her pen and the neighbouring pen were dusted the same day and the main pen and all surrounds were sprayed the next day.

I'm supposed to respray after 7 days. That was yesterday.

As I said lice just love a broody hen. This is the only time I have problems with lice when using moxidectin or ivermectin is when the hen is on the nest and/or with babies.

The kids and I did all of our chooks with ivermectin last night after dark. There are 20-odd (still not sure exactly) but it was so quick and easy to do them when they had gone to bed. And even though I didn't count them, it was easy to make sure none were missed when they were on the perch.

I think a few of ours were overdosed a bit, but no dead chookies this morning! :-D

I've just read through all 12 pages of this to try to find out about the withholding period for eggs and found your post CL saying 14 days. Much longer than I'd hoped, but makes sense when you think about how long it takes to make an egg.

I was going to do the peakids too, but they looked so scared when I invaded their pen with my headlamp on that I decided to leave them until we move them to their new pen!

Just a word on using ivermectin on dogs - I was reminded when reading through all of this again that some dogs are fatally allergic to ivermectin. We have Australian Shepherds and were told to avoid ivermectin as some collie-types have no tolerance of the product. We bit the bullet and used it on ours (I think it's in the heartworm injection) and neither one died (phew!!!).
