Really!

OMG I will so seperate him tomorrow morning! First thing.

Oh god, I can't lose Clara. I would be broken hearted if that happened. I give her a cuddle every morning and afternoon and she just sits up in my arms and watches her little one run around on the ground while I cuddle her.

You've just put the absolute fear of god into me now, but it's too late at night to be going and ripping him out from the pen now.

They all cry when they are away from each other as well. This is going to be a nightmare.

Yes, really :(

mummaroo wrote:
The sick chicken that has bloody watery droppings needs special attention. This one is going to need a heat source to keep it warm and probably antibiotics to prevent secondary infections like pneumonia. It is not always the coccidia that kills the chicken in all cases, it could be a secondary infection that the chicken has picked up due to being unwell with coccidiosis. It is also going to need extra fluids to help get it through and this is were Electrolytes are crucial. They will help to rest the gut and intestines, but will also give the extra energy needed while the chicken is sick. This is were a quiet laundry or spare bedroom a carry cage or cardboard box with soft bedding, wood shavings and the old hot water bottle wrapped well so as to not burn the chicken is ideal.Remember only use Baycox when needed.Don't just give it to the chickens cause you think they might have cocci.

Also thoroughly disinfect and muck out the pen that Clara and the young ones are in, and if possible perhaps move it. Though I did read in mummaroo's "Understanding Coccidiosis" that the coccidiosis oocyst were resistant to disinfectants, etc extracts are above and below.

mummaroo wrote:
The coccidiosis oocyst are resistant in the environment and to disinfectants, climate extremes and will survive in the soil for weeks unsporulated and up to 600 days once sporulated if protected from the extremes, but will only survive in deep litter for days due to heat caused by ammonia and fermentation. Oocysts are destroyed by below freezing temperatures and extremely high temperatures.I hope this is some help in understanding with pathogen a little more.

Here's the thread again.

Baycox (Toltrazuril) is the best treatment for coccidiosis because it actually kills the coccidia.
Sulpha-based drugs and amprolium just stop the coccidia from multiplying, but may be easier to get than Baycox.
You may be able to get baycox from a local vet or produce store.

Because part of the life-cycle involves multiplication of the coccidia within the cells lining the chicken's intestine or caecum, and these cells often burst (which is why you see blood), then sometimes the damage caused is too severe and the bird succumbs no matter what treatment you use.

Just make sure she has plenty of water avaialble and that you can keep her as warm as possible.

Good luck.

Thanks HH, Thanks Parvo,

I will try and source some Baycox tomorrow. What are the negatives to the Toltrazuril drug Parvo? Do you know?

Can you overdose chickens on Sulphadim? I think i squirted too much in one of the chicks mouths today. hide:

My only girl has the bloody poo now so I thought maybe it best to keep them all together? And treat them as a whole group.

I don't know. th_Noooo.gif

Clara cracks up when they cry out for her if they are away from her so I really don't know how to stop them fom crying & to stop Clara clucking like mad because she can hear her babies cheaping their heads off.

Suggestions?

Really sorry to read about Ebony, maybe if you have 2 down then keep them all together and treat them all?

Maybe it is less stressful to keep them and treat all of them, as a family group, as stress can trigger off weaker immune systems. I honestly have no idea.

Good luck again Chicka-Dee, important keep them warm, especially if it is chilly in your parts. Have a read through mummaroo's post again.

Agree with everything H&H has posted.
If you follow the dose rates then there is no risk of overdosing with baycox & no side effects.
Don't worry about the sulphadim- a single overdose is unlikely to do much.

Okay well I went and got the Baycox today! My wallet is feeling very light now as it was pretty expensive & I could only buy it in a 1ltr bottle.

I am not giving it to Clara because apparently it is pretty toxic stuff but good for killing the Coccidiosis parasite. I'm giving Clara the Sulphadim instead.

The Baycox label says not to give it to poultry producing eggs for human consumption so only the chicks are getting it. I also contacted Bayer & asked about a waiting period for the chicks for when Ebbony starts laying eggs & they advised me that 2 months was the waiting period for chicks, which is heaps cause she won't be ready for at least 3months before she is at POL.

Thanks again HH & Parvo for the help. wave.gif I will keep you all posted about their progress as hopefully now I've got the good stuff they will get through this with flying colours. Fingers crossed! :-?

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
