This is MY article that was posted else ware on another web site owned by Elizabeth Vardy and I have just discovered it was not and has not been removed when I instructed them in writing, them being both administrators, to remove it, so a court order will now be sort to have it or the site removed permanently and compensation. I am not sure if I did post this here but it will not hurt to re post it anyway. I hope it helps newcomers

BEWARE OF SOME BREEDERS SELLING DISEASED BIRDS

This advise is primarily targeting the Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease aka CRD

Unfortunately all too often some breeders are more than happy to knowingly and willingly sell Diseased birds to the unsuspecting. Too often we read or hear about yet another person buying birds (including at some Auctions) only to get them home and discover the Disease. This practice is not only immoral it is also Illegal (Animal Husbandry Act) It is the responsibility of all breeders help prevent the spread of this and any disease. Here are a few quick pointers on what to look for when buying poultry.

1) If the set up of the person you are looking to buy from is: Dirty, Overcrowded, Facieses Smell, Smells of Rodents. Walk away

2) Check all the birds in and around the cage make sure they are ALL in general good appearance pay particular attention to any discharge from the Beak, Eyes or Sneezing, if any of these are present. Walk away

3) Ask the breeder if he/she vaccinates their birds if not, Walk away, if they claim they do ask for evidence, they should show you the Products used.

4) If you are new to Poultry try to enlist the help of an experienced reparable breeder take he/she along with you for advice.

5) Do some home work on the breeder before you buy, check on Forums & Message boards. New boards in the future may greatly help this process by exposing the ones to avoid at all costs.

6) Closely examine each bird you buy, hold the bird, check the vent area, and feel the breast bone area making sure the bird has body weight. Do not let the breeder put them straight in the box.

7) Quarantine the birds when you get home for 14 days, do not put them in with your existing birds.

Interesting. Those points are good but there's a couple of other considerations...

Some breeders don't like taking the 'public' through their setup not only because of the chance of spreading disease but you can't always be sure the person seeing your setup has your best interest at heart. You may not always be able to see the actual setup of their breeding pens.

Only buying vaccinated birds doesn't necessarily mean the birds aren't going to become sick. Also, the average backyarder/breeder may not be to continue vaccinating future birds themselves so having one bird vaccinated is pointless (as such).

I'd be inclinded to take comments on forums and messages boards with a pinch of salt. You mostly have no idea who the person is who's making the comments and how much knowledge they have themselves. Going straight to a poultry club would probably give you more sensible advice. On forums and message boards you never know what is behind someone's negative comments and most forums don't like it if you mention names. For example, if I read negative comments from someone who said their posted eggs didn't do well, how do I know this wasn't their first time, or that they were running their incubator properly, or the problem wasn't Australia Post etc.

If you post information on a public forum there's always the chance it will be used elsewhere. Did the other forum provide a link to your original article? As long as there's reference to where the information came from Im fairly sure people are allowed to share information. I've often quoted other websites (but provided a link) if I think its going to help whatever the thread is talking about. In the end its all to help poultry lovers isn't it?

The information within my article is by no means complete it is by my words advice primarily targeting the Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease. It is then by that definition basic advice but has merit and by all means add what you feel will assist. As far as the other site I will not comment any further on this, it is a legal issue that I will represent. In addition the Admin here have made it very clear over the years they will not have any discussion about that site for very good reasons.

The balance of my reply has been PM to you.

Got that Lance and yes typical and common practice there, I have replied.

Please feel free to add any points I may have missed that you think may assist new poultry owners I can edit my article to include any valued points. I have asked the Admin to include the article in the health knowledge base if they believe it’s worthwhile.

Peter DO NOT edit your article = that can be seen by 'some' as copying and pasting from elsewhere = put further info into the post by clicking on 'POST REPLY" and inserting it further down the thread - this keeps the thread 'alive' as well [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]
then there is NO DOUBT the original posting is yours
