dosage of Avitrol plus

Does anyone know the right dosage for bantam chickens is it 10 drops please?

The direct dose for avitrol plus syrup is 10 drops per 100gm bodyweight so you are more likely to need 50 or 60 drops or more depending on the age & weight of your birds. There are 22 drops per ml so you'll need to give just under 0.5mls per 100gm bodyweight- this is a really awkward way of worming them.

You'd be better off using another more concentrated wormer or using Avitrol Plus tablets where 1 tablet/per bantam would probably be enough. However , it means having to grab each bird, open their beaks & push the tablet to the back of the throat. This is ok if you only have a few birds- and the advantage is that you know that they've got the dose- but is impractical if you have many birds.

In -water medications are simpler to use but the results are more variable depending on environmental temperature, presence of alternative water sources etc.

I didn't know there was a tablet I will look at that instead as I have found the dose rate to be too confusing for me

The tablet form is easy and cheap. I use the tablet form once a year just so I know everyone has been done. Personally I think all of ones birds should be handled and checked (inspected) at least twice yearly if not more often. Lumps and bumps under the feathers can't be seen and the birds don't always let us know something is wrong until it is way to late.

Thanks b&p I have read I should worm ever 4 months? is the tablet good for 12 months?

None of the worming drugs have much of a residual action. They work at the time you give them, then they're excreted from the body.

How often you worm them depends on the number & density of your chickens, how heavily contaminated the ground is with worm eggs and your local environmental conditions ie if you live in a wetter area you may have to worm more often than if you live in a dry area ( because the worm eggs survive better in moist organic conditions).

It’s a good practice to worm 3 times a year but if you let them out then you could worm 4 times a year, prevention over cure is better

Sorry, I do worm several times a year but I avitrol plus once a year to "make" sure everyone is done. I use different products the rest of the year depending on how busy I get and funds.

Am trying a new thing out next week that a friend has put me onto. It is strictly "off-label" but she has the dosage worked out etc so I will give it a whirl before passing on further details.

I use Avitrol tablets. We catch the chooks at bedtime and my daughter holds them while I give them their tablet and a half, and then put a drop of Swift under their tails and on the backs of their necks. We have pekins and bantam langshans, and they just about all weigh in the same dosage bracket, but any we're not sure about get popped on the kitchen scales for a quick check.
....so they are treated for external and internal parasites at the same time, and then quietly put back to bed.
All very quiet and stress free.
We have 50 odd to do, and to avoid confusion as to who is done (especially the langshans) I put a slip on leg band on them as I do them, but don't clip it shut.
