After yesterday's furore of finding her in the nesting box looking dead she has made it through the night. We have her inside near the a hydronic heating panel and started her last night on Triple C antibiotics. We will continue the antibiotics for another 4 days. We first gave her some Poly Aid Plus which helped.

I now have two questions.

Any idea on the withholding period for her eggs?

And how is the best way to put her back outside without dieing from the cold. Our house is at about 20 degrees and outside is at best about 12 degrees. Is it best to relocate her to the laundry first (no heating in there), then the garage and then back into the coop with the others over a period of 4 days.

So happy to hear that Penny has survived and has lived to see another day. Hope that she will fully recover, have a long happy life and give you much happiness and many more eggs.

Sorry I can't help you with your reintroduction questions. It's freezing in these hills especially over night and in the morning.

Hi Chickababe

Sorry to hear about Penny's woes

To answer your first question about the Poly-Aid, to my understanding there is no withholding period because it is made up of Vitamins & Supplements that help aid in the recovery of sickness in birds. So, more likely after they have had a serious bout of antibiotics, Parvo might be able to help more with this a little further though.

Have a read of this to get a better idea of the product & it's ingredients (Even though I'm sure the ingredients ate on the bottle). :-D
http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/vetafar ... -UEaGthiK0

Second question, are you sure it's just the cold that did this to her & not something else, as it sounds like something more has happened for her to get sick. But, that said, I think you're plan for reintroduction to the outside world is a feesible plan.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Thanks chick a dee,

I am not sure if the cold was the cause of her distress yesterday. She was a little wet on her head and tail feathers but not drenched. We towel dried her then left her to free range. She was found in the nesting box. I thought she had died. :( when we brought her inside she was gasping for air. I started her on antibiotics Triple C and don't know the egg withholding period for the them.

Hi, Chickababe wave.gif ,

Here's the link to Vetafarm and the product description of Triple C, maybe it would be best to contact them directly about the egg withholding period.

http://www.vetafarm.com.au/products/TRIPLE-C.html

They have a "Contact Us" tab on the site.

http://www.vetafarm.com.au/pages/CONTACT-US.html

Hope that Penny is better today.

Thank you PP,

I have done some research and to be safe a 14 day withholding period would be best.

Penny is in the coop tonight and hopefully will be ok in the morning.

How is Penny? Do you think that the Poly Aid Plus was a deciding factor along with your TLC (chooks have feelings too) in her making it through? Is this product worth buying?

Your opinion is valued.
Thank you, kindly 52.gif

Hello PP,
Penny is doing just fine now. I think the Poly Aid plus was the key ingredient as well as bringing her inside to warm her up. I would certainly recommend having some in your chookie medicine cabinet. After giving her some (using a babies medicine dropper) we could see her become more spritely within minutes.

Since it has been so very wet it is a bit of an issue for little silkies. The outer edges of the run does get some rain run off from the deck above. Our little Penny's favorite past time is scratching around in the wettest parts. Often her bouffant is a little wet, but at least the rest of her is dry. We are keeping a close eye on how wet she gets throughout the day. Two days ago we gave her a blow dry before bedtime. She's so cute and just stands on the towel while we blow dry her :-D

Thank you, kindly 52.gif Chickababe, for the update on Penny.

There was a brief glimmer of sunshine and blue sky today in the afternoon, we let the girls out and they had a flap and a run around and went straight back home!

I'll talk to mum about the Poly Aid Plus, we just bought all the Chook Spices!

I caught up with your Mum on the weekend and she told me about the spices. I hope your girls will like the spices added to their afternoon dinner.

Hopefully we can let the silkies out on the weekend. I've had to raise their desk coop off the ground to keep them dry. More waterproofing is now in place :-D

I hope you are on the mend PP.
