Hello, everyone with much more experience than I outthere...Can somebody out there please help me?

Having read a lot about meat meal from the butcher's bandsaw and improving the condition of one's chooks; I have asked our local butcher if he had any; he looked at me blankly(did I use the correct terminology?) when I tried to explain what it is. I have gone down to Victoria Market and asked some old fashioned Fair Dinkum butchers if they and sold any, as the newer butchers have also looked at me quizzically especially when I have said it was to improve the condition of my chooks.

I asked a butcher down the line a few days a go in regards to purchasing this and he informed me that he doesn't generate as much at all these days. I went back again today and this is what he gave me. There wasn't much so he didn't charge me, so I was wondering having never seen it before, nor ever preparing it before, if it is what it is supposed to be and more importantly how do I prepare it???

Thank you.

Hi HH wave.gif

That is exactly what I have been getting from my butcher as well.

I don't prepare it in any way, the girls just eat it like that.

I'm not sure if you are aware but, just like when you saw timber, fine shavings come off and fall to the floor. Except in this case the saw is going through bone and muscle of the animal that thy are cutting up (lamb, beef, pig etc...).

I have been feeding the really fine crumbs to the chicks and the bigger more clumpy stuff, I break up in to more manageable sizes for the girls and put it in the mix with the veggies & whatever else I am giving the girls on the day.

Hubby just went to the butcher on the weekend and he'd saved a bag full for us. He doesn't charge us anything for it as its just floor waste. We then just put it in the freezer & I get chunks out at a time to give to the girls over the next couple of days. It goes off pretty quick so I don't get out a lot each time. Just enough or two days worth. :-D

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Yes that sounds about right, if he had a vacuous, kind of dunno expression on his face you could quite rightly call that blank. Did he shrug his shoulders as well?

Hi, Chicka-Dee,

Wasn't that lucky with the raw meat meal, they turned their beaks up, muttered something between themselves, did an about face and marched off.

However when I cooked it, it all disappeared.

Hi, ww,

No shoulder [smilie=a_hrm.gif] shrugging just reminded me Homer Simpson [smilie=a_doh.gif]

They don't use saw dust down here anymore, it's actually been banned.

No preservatives used at this butcher either.

Ha ha ha ha, that's so funny HH,

Fussy little buggers.

My Isas eat almost anything, Priscilla (Plymouth Rock) on the other hand is really fussy, but she likes the butchers meat meal. I thought cooking would take all the nutrients out so I didnt bother cooking it, but now that you say you've done it,I might cook some with some garlic. I wonder if the babies would like that. I'm looking at ways to help build their immunity and I know you've said you use garlic to help with that and to help with the "wee beasties"

There's always one in every bunch Parvo, pretty much like WW being the comedian.

I think it's great we have a healthy balance of people on the forum. I think that/you/WW/PP/HH/Johs & all the rest that chat regularly on this forum make it really great. :-D

My babies loved natural yoghurt with really finely diced garlic through it, and finely mashed up hard boiled eggs that their mum who was eating the chick crumble and we couldn't eat her eggs, so we cook them for the babes. Also apple cider vinegar in their water. Maybe someone with more experience can give you the proper age to introduce garlic and apple cider vinegar.

When did your hen start laying eggs again PP?

Clara still hasn't laid an egg since she started this whole process.

Hi, Chicka-Dee wave.gif ,

Boss Chookie went back into lay as soon as her her babes left the nest about 7 weeks and The Pretty One at about 6 weeks, she had rambunctious boys and wanted to eggscape the nursery.
