What to do ?! i dont know what to do anymore.

well here i was thinking my chickens were all better now.... APPARENTLY not.

the disease is coming back again. (mycoplasmosis) and they have already been through antibiotic treatment TWICE. the last time being more than a week over once all signs were gone, just to be sure !!! was more than a month of treatment. (oxymav 100)

I am lost what else to do. clearly the antibiotics help them recover but it comes back again. no point keep shoving antibiotics in to them, the disease is still there. they are probably tolerant to the antibiotics already since they have had so much for more than 3/4th of their lives already.

I dont know what to do anymore. the only option left is to see a special Avian Vet. but what more can they do that i haven't already tried ?! and that a vet hasnt already told me to try....i've been following sooooo many peoples advice and information.

I'm almost ready to throw my hands in the air and give up. but what does give up mean ? let them suffer (NO) kill them (i wouldnt be able to) or pay out the butt to have them all "removed" (well thats just killing them too, so not really ideal option for me)

What are my options now... :cry:

Really very sorry to hear of your baby's ongoing health struggles BFLF.

I was on preventative antibiotics when I was little because of my kidneys, now I am resistant to them and if I get sick I have to get IV antibiotics and stay at hospital,don't feel sorry, it's OK I am used to it.

I don't know how much colder it get's in Newcastle in Autumn and Winter compared to Victoria, that's probably why your babies may have caught a chill

Do you have a RSPCA or Animal Aid vet centre near you that has a specialist poultry vet or can link to one. They maybe able to help.

You need something like Tylan to rid this disease so unless you have friends who have this drug then you need to find a very nice vet who will prescribe this can also be hard.

Tylan MAY clear the disease but in many cases mycoplasmosis has a chronic carrier state, particularly when birds are infected as chicks.
Some birds just never clear the infection because the bacterium has too strong a hold on their system.
The only things you can do is
1) Try to boost their immune system as much as possible- good feed, make sure they are not crowded, maintaining dry pens (no dust) as much as possible.
2) Try another antibiotic like Tylan

If these changes don't help then you may be better off culling these birds and starting again with new healthy stock. Disinfect the pen, replace the top layer of soil and lime what's underneath. Replace perches etc.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but from a practical point of view it may be the best option.

Macl27 is right with the Tylan but its also a hygiene and handling thing, (I'm not saying your poultry set up is not clean) but if you contact an Avian vet and begin another round of treatment then you will have to think about a complete clean and disinfect of your entire set up down to the walls, floors and all your feeding/watering equipment. Really hard with this cold weather.

I am so sorry to hear about the girls!

I vote for you doing another round of treatment with the girls and then doing as already mentioned with a complete clean down, removal of top layer of dirt, placing lime down to try & kill off the little germs & see how you go with that. And maybe a bath as well?

Like its a democracy to vote what to do with your girls!!!

You have done such a wonderful job in the past, I know you can get through this.

Really, sorry BFLF, to read about your babies.

It is very hard to cull them especially if you have raised and loved and cared for them since they were wee chicks.
