Great advice Mummaroo,

And good to see you have good relationship with your vets- it can really help.

I only have one more question- then I promise I'll shut up!!

You said your water pH is high- that means it's alkaline- wouldn't the apple cider vinegar help to buffer this?

Cheers

Parvo

Hi parvo,
It would normally but the irons and calcium that are found in the water cause the problems.I cant think of what the other chemical is but it throws everything out.All our drinking water has to be filtered with a special magnetic filter because of the problem.

Thanks Mummaroo,

Those problems are not uncommon with bore water. At least you know what you're dealing with and how to rectify it.

You guys do it a lot tougher out there!!!!!!!

Thanks parvo,
I have never thought of it being hard or tough till now and I am hoping to try to rectify the problem as much as possible. We are thinking of pumping water straight up out of the bore into the dam and because that is a big area it will stay cooler than in a tank(which is what we use now).May loose a bit of water through evaporation also.Only problem I have come up with at this point is that I originally wanted the dam because I love the native water birds. Now I am a bit concerned about the transfer of disease to my chooks through the water. My husband always says there is never a problem that cant be fixed. What do you think?

He is right, but just bear in mind that many of the outbreaks of Avian Influenza have been blamed on waterfowl visiting water sources used for poultry or dams situated near poultry, so be careful.

If you are going to use a dam I would filter it/treat it appropriately before the chooks can drink it. It all depends on how far you want to go.

If you have the choice I would situate the dam downwind (of the most prevailing winds) of where the chickens are kept and as far away as is practical. However, this means you have to pump the water further, which could cause its own problems.

What you don't want is duck waste running into the chicken pens egafter any heavy rain or blowing in on windy days.

Seems I'm just posing more problems for you!!

Cheers

Hi Parvo,
I am worried about the duck problem very much. The dam is already there on the Western side of my poultry yard and on the northern side of my house. The winds mainly come from the west and east. All bad winds from the west.Twisters and bad storms. That is where I wanted it before we built. It was so I could enjoy the waterfowl, ducks included.Up till now there has been no problem and it was never considered to be used for poultry just the stock sheep and cattle.I have stopped there access due to damage they were causing to the walls of the dam.I am very much aware of the dangers ducks pose with Avian Influenza due to many years of working with wildlife through WIRES

Maybe if we just buy say a few 10,000 litre tanks and pump water into them and keep them under the trees and have it so the water can settle and cool before use. That way with a few tanks one tank should be at least cool. I don't know at this point but we will have to work something out that is safe for all. We will just have to keep throwing ideas up in the air till we find something that will work and is practical.

Sound like good ideas.

Keep throwing up any other scenarios you might be considering. I'm sure others will have helpful suggestions and ideas.

I've been asked by Soozorps to post where I get the unpasteurised, unfiltered apple cider vinegar from. Sorry if this isn't the correct forum.

I just inquire at health food stores or sometimes find it in the health food section of the larger supermarkets. It is worth the extra effort to get the unpasteurised, unfiltered form.

Cheers
