Recipe for warm breakfast...

I found a recipe in this months organic gardening mag and modified it slightly to give to our girls. It's apparently useful for combating worms, sickness and boosting the immune system.

3-4 cloves squashed garlic
six dried chillis
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp tumeric
250 grams kangaroo mince
5 cups water (or so)

I added all of this together, let it cook particularly the garlic and chilli and then added more water and;

Veg scraps
loaf old bread (or half)
remnants of an apple loaf in fridge
ready to chuck out (but not rooten) veg from crisper
some very finely crushed egg shells that I save

And heated/cooked it all through. It actually smelled quite nice!
I made a bowl up and added about half again of the regular feed they have.

The mag article suggested milk instead of water but I was reluctant to use it. They also didn't include the other stuff, just grain etc which is already part of our girls feed anyway. Plus they are only youngish still so it's sort of just for a bit of a treat and to give them that extra from the spices etc.

They absolutely loved it and enjoyed it with a fresh side of crispy grass/weeds with a few goodies in them too! At least with this rain, we can find yummy worms and bugs for them.

I just heat a bit of the food up before I serve it. I have a while heap of it so might try freezing some and see how that goes.

Just thought I would share it with anyone interested and would be grateful for any tips/guidance if perhaps I am making a mistake without knowing it!!!

dont think you are iv'e found mine wont eat what they dont like an devouer every thing else { thats why i dont take naps in the pens while working on or in them

Not really Ashley, we just happened to have some nice left overs! But I did buy the kangaroo mince at a growers Market in Blackheath for a friend who has cats, but they can't eat it. It was only suitable for animals so I thought the girls might like it. And it's really cold at the moment so a warm breakie is nice to get you going I think!

I have been Reading for a while also about the medicinal benefits of tumeric, which was in the original recipe and so included it. Chilli was as well as garlic. Apparently tumeric for humans combats or rather is a prophilactic for cancer. They attribute the fact that people in Asia such as India have such low rates of cancer to the high use of it. I am not sure how conclusive the evidence is but in a few articles I have read, it reccommended growing it at home if you can. We keep a stock of it as we have a few Indian and Sri lankin friends who often generously show us the ropes of traditional cooking. Yummo.

I know as well as garlic, chilli is a great immunity booster. So why not try it out on the chooks too? Might even make for some tasty eggs!

It sounds good BUT I would not feed chickens meat, mainly due to salt levels can cause salt poisoning. I dont feed mine meat full stop but it’s up to you, other than that it sounds good.

Oh ok, that's interesting as I have been told by a number of people even raw mince is good for them. I was not do sure so I opted for cooking the mince that I had which was kangaroo. I think the original recipe MAY have included mince but I would need to doubles check. But good point a d thanks for the tip!

My only concern is the "pet quality" roo mince- most likely contains preservatives like sulphur dioxide which I would avoid if possible.

Chickens are omnivores and will eat meat if given the opportunity- I've seen them go for the odd mouse even. Feeding large quantities, however, can lead to digestion problems eg sour crop.

Also, many go on about the health benefits of various herbs and spices but be careful of potential side effects. For example, onions and garlic can cause blood clotting problems at certain levels, but no one really knows what these levels are in chickens. Having said that, garlic is often used with poultry without any problems.

So as a treat, it should be fine to feed your mix.

You can buy Kangaroo mince that is preserative free. We sell it for $5.50 a kg in our Feed Store.
