Dear Rare Breed Poultry Exhibitor,

In 2009 the Ipswich Show Society’s Poultry Section included a number of Rare Breed Poultry classes to provide a more interesting spectacle for the show and to reward you for the work you do in supporting these breeds.

In 2009 the Ipswich Show Poultry Pavilion received over 20,000 thousand visitors and most were thoroughly surprised by the standard and variety of exhibits. As a steward, I was proud to point out to our visitors the exquisite entries in the rare breeds classes, many of which the general public would have never seen. It was also rewarding to see an exhibit from the rare breed classes take out the Champion Bird of Show prize.

To encourage you to the Ipswich Show in 2010 your Rare Breed Poultry have the following major awards to compete for:
• Champion Rare Breed – 1 year’s subscription to the popular Australasian Poultry magazine (Kindly donated by Australasian Poultry magazine) and sash;
• Champion Rare Breed Large – Professionally built marine ply carry box with engraved plaque and sash;
• Champion Rare Breed Bantam - Professionally built marine ply carry box with engraved plaque and sash.
Similar to last year, there will be a separate judge with rare breed knowledge and the rare breed champions will be eligible for the overall awards of the show.

The 137th Ipswich Show is on from the 6th to 8th of May 2010 with penning on Wednesday 5th May. You can obtain a full schedule by visiting the Ipswich Show Society’s website at www.ipswichshow.com.au or by contacting the friendly Ipswich Show Society administration staff during business hours on (07) 3281 1577.

Looking forward to catching up with you at the show,

Kind regards,

Brett Knight

Ipswich Show Poultry Steward

Excuse my ignorance, but can you list a few rare breeds as per the criteria for the show.

For example, are White Australorps rare? What about Aseels? Jersey Giants? Blue Orpingtons?

Thanks.

G'day Greenaus,

Firstly, all fowl will be welcome to the show but may not be eligible for the rare breed sections. Secondly, in the rare section the focus is on breed rather than rare colours or varieties of common breeds. A white "large" australorp is a rare colour of a common breed and is not included. Large moderns are not included in the rare section because the bantam version is common.
Orpingtons are not included but can still be entered in the softfeather sections.
There is no absolute list of rare fowl available so it is a best guess of what is rare in the area. If you have rare fowl that are not listed we can accomodate you if you give us notice.

Large: Andalusian; Araucana; Aussie Game; Barnevelder; Brahma; Campine; Cochin; Croad Langshan; Dorking; Faverolles; Frizzle; Hamburgh; Houdan; Jungle Fowl; Legbar; Malay Game; Minorca; New Hampshire; Polish; Sicillian Buttercup; Spanish; Transylvanian Naked Neck; Welsummer; Any other recognised rare breed large.
Bantam: Andalusian; Araucana; Aussie Game; Barnevelder; Belgian D'Anvers; Belgian D'Uccle; Belgian D'Watermael; Brahma; Dorking; Faverolles; Frizzle; Hamburgh; Houdan; Japanese; Legbar; Malay Game; Minorca; Polish; Rosecomb; Sebright; Spanish; Any other recognised rare breed bantam.

I'd be interested on hearing what people think of this list. I realise that some breeds in the list are borderline on being rare and may be more common in some areas but it was designed with the best intention to encourage more exhibitors.

G'day Julie,

No they aren't. The waterfowl section is a separate section with different stewards. They have classes for heavy breeds, light breeds, minatures, pairs and juniors.

Tiger

I pretty much knew you were going to say that ;)

I suppose I was trying to drop a hint for future shows :idea:

Julie, as much as I'd like to I can't afford to sponsor the whole show. George Wilson is the Chief Steward for the waterfowl section. George doesn't keep waterfowl himself but he does a terrific job with the section. I'm sure he would listen to any suggestions.

Porkey, yes, you have to pay entry to the Ipswich Show. I am not sure what the price of admission will be this year. Check out the website for more information.

Cheers, Tiger.

Tiger,

I didn't realise until I looked at the schedule that you did the sponsoring, that is very generous of you....it is a shame you can't get some businesses to sponsor......I have looked at the schedule and thought about it......I doubt that I shall be able to make it this year

Thanks Julie,

Megg Miller from Australasian Poultry magazine kindly offered to sponsor the champion rare breed prize this year. I will continue to sponsor this section but yes we need to involve local business much more. Fortunately, for the remainder of the poultry section, a couple of the local Councillors supported us this year.

That's ok, I'll most likely catch up with you at Toowoomba. It will be good to see how your bantams are going.

Tiger.
