White Peahen

I sold a white peahen at the Albury Poultry Auction yesterday for $130, it was only 8 months old.

But the sad news is that the new owner placed it in a bigger cage in the back of their car and did not cover the cage with a cloth or blanket.

The girl then got a fright a jumped up, as they do and broke it neck.

I am so disappointed and sad that after all my work and love she died that way. She was a very quiet girl and was happily to sit and watch everybody past by all day during the auction.

She will be sadly missed.

BB, It brakes your heart when this sort of thing happens, unfortunately we hear this all to often. We use PP40 Pet packs with 3 inch foam on the roof, this works on many levels as it limits room and prevent direct contact with the roof. We freight all over Australia using this method and in 15+ years have never lost a bird. We have replied to countless emails asking the best way to transport Peafowl and even after giving detailed information and advise, some still use large boxes or wire cages with disastrous results.

,but I wonder what sort of life your bird would have had with someone without the basic principles of transportation of birds/animals, I fear it's daily needs may have been lacking as well at it's new home.

No Pam, it was one I bought the previous day, I only have one white female left of your crew, the other have been sold off or swapped for adults.

I guess they didn't know. We always put signs up if we are selling our birds or inform the buyers who come here of all the possibilities we can think of of potential disasters and give our phone number so people can ring for help. This is not to say we are the experts. We have had a few disasters, and I always give people the PA website address and credit them with a lot of our knowledge. I have put lots of people off buying them from us because I didn't think their situation was suitable, eg too close to roads, not enough tall trees, etc. We have some people nearby who were told they only had to lock them up for a week. Needless to say they both flew off in opposite directions. The remains of one were found a km away: it had been taken by a fox, and the other was never seen again.

Pam, I agree, I have had people turn up to collect peacocks with open top cages etc,etc, have no facility for locking the birds up at their end, so I have refused to sell the birds to them,then they bad mouth you ---- such is life :!:

We have also declined to sell to certain breeders for reasons similar to Snowball & Pam. We have over the last few years gone to several breeders properties at their invitation to view & advise on their set-up particularly when it comes to Green Peafowl & some Pheasants and all but one have taken our advise and the one that didn't we declined their order.
We have done even more via Emails with Photos due to location.

The birds come first, it's that simple!

Pam, we would get 2+ emails a week from breeders who have purchased Peafowl and let them out 1-4 weeks later and watch them fly-away. What makes it worse is they were told to do this by so called experience breeders. One email said the seller had kept Peafowl for 20 years and told the buyer to let them out after 48 hours, he probably wanted to sell them more!
