I'd like to someday have a peacock, noise is not a factor as our closest neighbour is a kilometre away however I do need to have him securely penned as we live near a busy highway and I'd hate to see him run over.

I've currently got a six foot fenced chicken run that houses my hens but as I have turkeys in there I heard that you cannot house peacock with turkey. Is that because of the incidence of blackhead?

Are peacocks always housed in covered pens? I'd like to (and am able to) provide a large area for the peacocks but would like to hear what everyone else has theirs in.

I keep mine separate from both chickens and turkeys because of the disease factor its not so much blackheads that concerns me as other things like bubbly eye ect..

You will definitely have to roof the run or he will be out on the first day, mine are in large runs with big grass areas so they graze and find bugs ect.. When I built mine I worked on PA's rule of "never to big" because peafowl need lots of room especially when the peacocks have their full grown trains

Yep same as me I never mix mine with ANY other birds and make sure the roost perches are nice and high they love that

I am also interested in this topic. We built a nice big pen for our peafowl as we were advised to keep them locked up for a minimum of six months while they "bonded" to the property.

They are still penned up as it's breeding time (and the six months is not up yet), but I had eventually wanted them to free-range. However our young dogs just killed one of our free-ranging guinea fowl and unless we can get them trained out of chasing (and obviously killing) the birds, then it looks like the peafowl may have to be permanently penned. I feel so cruel keeping them penned up, even though their flight is pretty big. Do they cope with a permanent captive life? I really hate keeping things in cages, but am worried that this may end up being my only option.

90% of peafowl in australia are penned 24/7 because of predators and for controlled breeding. They do very well in a pen 24/7 with the right diet and lots of space to move around. It is not cruel to have them penned as its not for any bird

Very good point the roosts need to be as high as possible

Thanks Tolmie, that makes me feel a bit better. It is a large pen, with lots of planting and high perches. The birds all seem happy enough, and are breeding fertile eggs (no chicks yet, but hopefully over the next few days). I strive to give them a varied diet high in protein.

And that is exactly what they need as do pheasants. Do you feed them the pellets as well as grains ect..?

The 2 reasons for not housing with turkeys is respiratory and blackheads now I have never had either but they tell me that turkeys are high risk of both. So on the side of caution I have no other fowl with mine. All my cages are roofed and you have to even if they have 12 foot sides because peafowl are good flyers and will get out. If you do get them one day you will not regret it they are fantastic fowls to have around
